Pairin
Apothecary Diaries

Why I chose to make this costume:
My first cosplay of 2026 was a stash build of an under-appreciated character from one of myn favorite series - Apothecary Diaries! I’ve always liked Pairin, who is one of the three Princesses of the Verdigris House where Maomao grew up. The women there raised Maomao and are her family, and Pairin was the one I always wanted to cosplay as. She’s so sassy and outrageous but also has such a good head on her shoulder and is so kind.
How I made this costume:
Pairins outfit in the anime is not the prettiest, with the beige dress and off the shoulder slouchy look, but I wanted to see if I could adapt it into a real outfit with nuance. Fabric choice was the key and I hunted some champagne & creme brocade options last year. I also made sure I had the orange Asian brocade for the trim and light blue fur for her wrap. The rest of the fabrics I already owned from my Danmei and hanfu costuming hobby.
With how crazy December was, I started January with some time off and didn’t think about making Pairin until it was almost too late, so I con-crunched out the entire costume in 3 days. This style of hanfu costuming and even the corseted bodice making is very familiar to me, and I was fairly confident I could get it all done if I worked 10 - 12 hrs per day.
Call this responsible con-crunching? Only crunch if you know what you’re doing and don’t have to stop to experiment. Then a full wearable costume is quite possible in just a few days.
This costume is made up of a champagne robe for the top half, which is not lined for time-saving sake, but all seams are serged and finished. I constructed the orange collar to sandwich 5mm EVA foam in between fabric so the slouchy collar has shape.
I made a red boned corsetted bodice to be worn under the champagne robe, for extra structure and support. The robe is snapped onto the red bodice.
On the bottom half I made two skirt layers and embellished them with gold scallop trim from India.
A purple belt tied everything together in the middle, and I made the fur-trimmed shawl freehand with no pattern.
I also had a purple wig from @purplepluminc which I crimped and styled for Pairin.
Thoughts on this costume:
I'm really happy with my adaption of Pairin and it was super fun to cosplay with my friend @binkxy at Anime Los Angeles! The advantage to cosplaying a side character is that they fit into groups and duos well, and I really hope I can join more Apothecary Diary cosplayers in the future for some fun interactions!
