MIYUKI-CHAN

Miyuki-chan in Wonderland

Photographer

Why I chose to make this costume:

This costume was created for a skit based on Moulin Rouge-style costumes. After seeing the movie, 6 other girls and I began designing our own versions of the Wonderland Girls. The challenge was to take the original CLAMP designs, elaborate them and alter them with typical late 1800's Showgirl elements as seen in "Moulin Rouge," but still retain the key elements of the original characters.

How I made this costume:

I don't think I have ever made a costume with more bits and parts before... The fluffy blue dress Miyuki wears was altered into two entities. A see-through undershirt with puffy sleeves and a corset with shoulder ruffles and flowers, and a rip-away can-can skirt with the apron attached to it. The skirt has a lining with the traditional can-can ruffles, alternating between blue and white. I also created various accessories for this detailed outfit—gloves, bows, bloomers... and embellished other parts like the garters, garter belt, shoes... Practically every part of the costume has been hand-decorated with sequins, ribbons, flowers, rhinestones etc. in the colors of white, iridescent and blue.

Thoughts on this costume:

I am very happy with the turnout of the outfit as well as the entire group. We all managed to complete our costumes in time and everyone looked great and very close to the CLAMP character designs. I enjoy wearing this one very much and hope to get a lot of use out of it before the year is over.
